Friday April 6th Stampede Corral
(Long version, get your milk and cookies first..lol)
отчетThe last night of the Taste Of Chaos Tour 2007, all ended at the Stampede Corral Calgary Alberta.
For some reason I could not contain my excitement and anxiety. My crap seats opposite the stage were replaced a week before by GA floor tickets, and I was hoping to get front row.
My reason for going to this concert was to see 30STM. I am a fairly new fan and am an enthusiastic fan. I love all the songs on both albums which is a rarity. I love the melancholy, stark, haunting tracks, that I play on repeat, continually.
Indeanna and I arrived at the venue early sporting our t-shirts and jackets that showed us to be Mars fans. We bought more hoodies and t-shirts as soon as the doors opened, got red wristbands for the signing, and got a spot up against the barricade on the right side of the stage. ( My right )
The other bands came and went, some I liked, some not. When the revolving portion of the stage turned slowly and I saw the oriental setting, gleaming red and gold, and the huge drum set, up high on a pedestal, I knew I would soon see 30STM for the very first time.
The crowd had responded differently to each band. Aiden had the crowd going for their set. But when the lights dimmed the tension was apparent, the crowd screames loudly as the first strains O Fortuna are heard. The music builds louder and louder, I lean to Indeanna and tell her I love this song !!! I look on stage, and behind me into the crowd, expecting anything to happen, for Jared to lead the band through the centre of the floor. Then four guys appear on stage all dressed as cowboys !!! Black hats, jeans and plaid western shirts, with bandana's covering their faces they cavort about stage doing exaggerated cowboy dance moves. Decoys, I think to myself, and glance behind me again. The song changes to some dorky country tune. The one guy goes to the edge of the stage and waves to the crowd, and motions them to scream louder, and you can see the red and black hair, and it really is them up there. Jared is hysterical, elbow bent pumping his arm to the music, tapping his foot like mad. The song changes again to ABL,"How the F___k ya doin Calgary!!!" he yells with a country twang. As he pulls down his bandana and sings, he is still into his cowboy character, doing some two stepping and twirling around the stage. He's wearing a blue and red plaid shirt, Canadian flag printed bandana, sheriffs badge, blue wranglers and white runners with stripes. No belt.. "Dude!! where's the dinner plate buckle? LMAO !!!" "Calgary Scream !! " he shouts, and we do. The boys definitely did not disappoint. I took photo's and video, the distortion from all the speakers was bad for the video's sound, but God I love the feeling in front row, with the bass just reverberating in pulses against me, with every driving beat.
Jared has total control over the audience, he demands attention on stage and he gets it, coaxing everyone to sing or pump their fists in the air. All the fans seemed to really be enjoying 30STM, the noise level went up dramatically when they played ,with enthusiastic screaming after each song. Jared plays his black guitar Artemis, his vocals strong, his wails done with complete ease. And though I would have preferred a "bad guy" dressed in black cowboy, Jared is dead sexy in that black cowboy hat. His face cast in shadow, his hair unruly waves of black and red. A slight scruff of facial hair, and the eyes flash a blazing blue fire, when he tilts his head, and they catch the light.
Tomo is on the opposite end of the stage, wearing blue chequered shirt, red bandana and black hat. He and Jared cavort while a camera man who has been filming follows everyone's antics. Shannon is pounding on his drum set, western shirt stripped off, flesh and tatoos gleaming as he exerts himself. The new guitarist, Tim?... is right in front of me and doing a fine job, although I wish I could have seen the show with Matt still there. During Buddha For Mary Jared leaps into the audience, teetering on the barrier, and the front row crowd, he sings to the people all around him for several moments, before going back on stage.
He stops to talk to us several times, thanking us for having a sense of humour re the cowboy spoof. Their set is missing a couple of songs, not sure why, they are not running behind, but some time is taken up asking us to all yell "Yee Haw!!" for the man filming. Jared mentions it is for a DVD , but I am not sure if it is for the band, or to distribute.
Much of the audience seems to know the words as 30STM plays their set list, and I feel gratitude for the fans of the other bands, for the fantastic response to the boys.
He tells the mosh pit to do a Doh-C-Doh..sp?... lol, and I can't see how it turned out. Jared banters with the crowd a lot, which I love, he calls us all Mother F---ers !many times, all in good fun. He asks us to scream out Thank You's, for all the people that work their asses off behind the scenes to put on the show every night. He introduces the band, with silly western names, he and his brother are both named Jedediah,... lol. He tells us they will be signing stuff after their set so to come on out and say hello, and bring our shirts, shoes, socks , and condoms to be signed.
This part of the concert is going by much too fast, but I feel grateful to hear this band live after listening to their c.d.'s every day for weeks. The connection in a concert setting between fans and an artist is a palpable thing. There are moments when you really do feel you are all under the same spell for a short time. Jared is the sorcerer this night, and when he starts to sing The Kill, all eyes are on him. Everyone is singing along loudly and he jumps off the stage on our side, and leaps up on the short wall surrounding the floor. He climbs into the bleachers and turns to us and we are all singing, and fans are running out of their seats to come down and be near him. He climbs back down and disappears into the mosh pit weaving his way through the crowd, and if I had one word to describe Jared, it would be Fearless !! He ends up back on stage for this their last song, and Indeanna and I are already on the way off the floor to line up for the signing.
Part Two (This is after 30STM is done their set)
The Signing
The winding road led up through thick forest to the fantastic sight of the hotel. Imposing and immense, it seemed alive, its many windows like cold calculating eyes... silent and aloof I felt it to be watching us...... judging us....
OOPs sorry.. that's The Shining, not the signing...LOL,... back to the recap.....
We take our place in the long lineup, and the boys are soon with us signing, and the line moves rather quickly. I have a signed c.d. and signed insert, so I had printed off a photo of the band, and one B&W close-up of Jared, for him to sign. I go first and sitting behind a table are Shannon then Tomo and last Jared. I thank Shannon for coming, and he looks up smiles slightly and nods. I thank Tomo too, and he looks up and says "Thanks", and"oh, I like your hair", holding his hands near his head, and I thank him lol, I have red hair, all messy and shoulder length.
Jared looks up, smiles and says hi, when he looks at you it's like he can see all your secrets, he has direct and slightly mischievous gaze. I hand him the photo and he looks at it. "UUghh noooo !" he cries. " Awww come on" I reply. I take it he does not like the close-up of (just him). He says "Oh oh.... here...... and grins evilly and makes an X on his forehead. I gasp and laugh, he signs his left cheek and hands the photo back. I laugh and say "That's ok, but I already have a signed c.d from you guys." I wanted the photo's for a collection that I have hanging on my wall, but he did not know it. I say thank you and boot it around the barrier, the only place that you can take photo's. There are others there, and I try to find Indeanna in the line. It is too late, she is already in front of Jared, and too late to get pix of her and him.
She walked up, and Shannon noticed her cool jacket and said "Hey nice jacket" nudges Tomo, and says "Hey look at this chicks nice jacket !" Shannon signs her photo. Tomo looks up,"Nice Jacket", and signs the photo. Indy Thanks them both. Jared sees Indy, "Nice Jacket!" he says. She thanks him and he signs her photo, "See you next time we come to Calgary" he says. Indy replies "Yeah but next time you have to come alone so you can play more songs and stay longer." We will"
he said and Indeanna smiles and starts to wave and leave, when Jared reaches his hand out, and gives her a fist pound. She walks around the barrier and finds me, She told me later she started to shake when it was all over. We both took photo's, me with my camera and her with her cell phone. Jared stood up to leave, Indy was trying to take his photo, he noticed this, so he stopped. A women stood in front of him blocking Indy's way. He in slow motion took a step sideways so Indy could see him again. With a completely blank face he stared at Indy until she took the photo( a bit blurry) lol, then he chuckled and waved to everyone, said bye and off they went behind a curtained off area. The crowd had all left, The Used was still playing. Indeanna and I were just standing there wondering what to do now, we are just beside the barrier, and had been talking to some venue dude. Indeanna and I notice someone coming up behind us. Here comes Shannon walking right up to us . "Hey guys, thanks for coming, see you again" He puts his arm around Indy and looks at me offers his other arm. We all share a group hug , and I say" Awwww... Thank You soo much" " Please come back again, just YOU guys ! " He speaks to the venue dude, and then off he goes behind the curtain again. What a sweetie.
We were told we could go out to the buses by that guy that Shannon had spoke to later. So we braved the wind and the cold to go find the black bus.. Hhmmmfff there were like seven buses, and several were black. We had put on the concert hoodies under our coats, but it was still cold. There were a few other fans and we stood and talked waiting to see if anyone would come say good bye. I am not sure how long we waited, but Shannon sees us and walks over. He is wearing a black winter coat with fur trimmed hood. Still he is facing into the cold wind that leaves me shaking. Shannon has a lovely manner about him, he seems accessible, and charming, and not in any rush. We are standing behind yet another barrier and he goes down the line and greets each fan, giving hugs, posing for a few photo's. Indy waits and he comes up to her. "Can I have a picture?" she asks. "Sure" he says and they snuggle together and pose and I take the photo, and say thank you. He poses with this cute puppy dog exprеssion, and it's a great photo. Someone asks if Jared will come out, and he says he does not know. I thought he had gone back already when minutes later I see him walk away from the crowd. Wow...so sweet. We wait nearly an hour more, but we get too cold, and need to catch the C train, so we leave, hoping we did not leave at a bad time, and miss seeing Jared and Tomo.
What ? your still with me? LMAO... so it's over..sobs... we leave with memories, hugs, autographs, photo's, video's , hoodies, tshirts, and one guitar pic, and.... gratitude.
I miss them already, I always get after concert blues, especially for bands like this. I get that empty feeling in the pit of my stomach, hours later, when it's all being relived in my mind.
I want them to return soon ! I want them to be safe, and I wish them success on the rest of their tour dates. I want to thank them for coming, and remembering their Canadian fans. I thank 30STM for the music, and Echelon for helping to ensure their success, and making it possible for me to enjoy the music now. I hope the band knows that they need never fight a battle of one. They have behind them an army of fans, who share their love of music, and their love for this band remains irrefutable.
I await your return.
